The company was founded in 1915 by Ludwig Berger, an Austria Engineer. In the early days Berger produced equipment for wood processing such as saws and log transport units. All design work was innovative and state of the art.
In the early nineteen fifties, Ludwig Berger invented a machine for weaving reed mattresses which was produced until the early nineteen nineties. An invention that followed was a machine for pressing reed into boards used for building houses. This machine was sold hundreds of times and is still in use in many European countries.
When Berger was taken over by Gustav, Ludwig's son, Berger continued machine building mainly in the wood processing business, concentrating on fully automated units with electronic controls. In 1985 cooperation with IBS Austria began when the first long-grinding machine for ceramic covers was designed and built together with IBS Engineers. Berger has so far built 18 such specialized grinding machines, up to 22m in length and with up to 5 CNC axis of control.
Business with stainless steel dewatering elements started also together with IBS, who subsequently took over Berger in 1994. In 2002 Berger built more than 400 dewatering elements of different designs and up to 10m in length. Fabrication and machining of equipment is also done by Berger for other IBS PPG members such as JUD AG Papiermaschinen and James Ross Limited.
In October 2002 a new assembly building was finished and with the installation of two fully CNC lathes complete with automatic feeders and 80 tool magazines, the machining capability and quality at Berger has been further improved. The current staff at Berger consists of 75 highly trained production workers and support personnel.
